A substantially rebuilt golden-age Knabe grand
Wm. Knabe & Co. of Baltimore was one of the great American piano makers of the early twentieth century, and this 5′8″ grand comes from the heart of that era. About eighteen years ago, it received a substantial rebuilding that would likely be valued above $30,000 at today’s prices: a new pinblock, new strings and tuning pins, new hammer assemblies, new wippens, new backchecks, new keytops, and a complete refinishing. The result is a piano with far newer working parts than its age suggests, and a price far below what that work would cost today.
The refinishing is the highlight. The cabinet remains genuinely handsome, with only minor dings, light scratches, and perhaps a touch of fading from sunlight. The new pinblock is in good condition with a healthy tuning pin torque estimated at about 70 in·lb.
We want to be equally clear about what this piano needs. The rebuilder’s action work did not match the quality of the refinishing: the new parts are well made but out of adjustment. The piano needs comprehensive regulation and voicing, damper work, and pedal regulation. This is skilled but routine work for our technicians on components with long life ahead of them, and the piano is priced to fully reflect its need for maintenance. The original soundboard was retained and shimmed during the rebuilding; the tone is mostly mellow and pleasant, though it thins somewhat in the upper-middle treble, where sustain is shorter than ideal.
